The Guadeloupe Teacher Retreat is currently in development for June 2028.
This future program will take French teachers into the Guadeloupe archipelago: Grande-Terre, Basse-Terre, Marie-Galante, and Les Saintes, each offering a different way to understand France in the Caribbean.
Guadeloupe is part of France, but it is too often missing from how students imagine French culture. This retreat will help educators explore the archipelago through its landscapes, Creole language, literary voices, local education, ecological realities, music, foodways, and cultural memory.
From the volcanic rainforest of Basse-Terre to the rural heritage of Marie-Galante, from the coastal and cultural life of Grande-Terre to Les Saintes, known for one of the most beautiful bays in the world, this retreat will offer teachers a deeper way to bring the French Caribbean into their classrooms.
The program will also highlight Guadeloupe’s literary and intellectual presence, including figures such as Maryse Condé, whose work opens powerful conversations around memory, identity, colonial history, family, language, and belonging.
This program is designed for French teachers, World Language educators, and educators in U.S. institutions who want to teach the Francophone world beyond mainland France.
It is a strong fit for:
French teachers at the middle school, high school, or university level
World Language educators looking to expand how they teach the Francophone world
Teachers who want concrete classroom takeaways, not just inspiration
Educators who value honest cultural work: rigorous, respectful, and unsanitized
Curriculum leaders or department chairs looking for stronger ways to include Martinique and the French Caribbean
Educators who want to connect language teaching with history, ecology, memory, art, identity, and lived realities
Participants are responsible for making sure they meet all travel requirements for Martinique before departure.
A valid passport is required for U.S. travelers.
